From Navy to Distillery: The Inspiring Journey Behind Tobacco Barn Distillery

The world of whiskey is often steeped in tradition and rich stories, and the tale of Tobacco Barn Distillery is no exception. Founded by Rear Admiral (Ret) Scott Sanders and his close friends Dan Dawson and Sean Coogan, this distillery is a confluence of three remarkable journeys, culminating in a shared passion for whiskey and community.

A Unique Beginning

Scott Sanders, who spent years in the Navy running the Anti-Piracy task force in the Red Sea, found an unexpected connection with global leaders through an act of kindness—handing out bottles of American Bourbon signed with a gold pen. This gesture left a lasting impression on our allies and served as a testament to the power of this American spirit as a bridge between cultures.

Meanwhile, Dan Dawson had already laid the groundwork for a distillery. In the 1970s, during a fuel crisis, he secured one of the few licenses to produce ethanol in the U.S. With a background rooted in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, where his family owned a farm, Dan’s agricultural ties only strengthened his resolve to bring distilling back to the area. Sean Coogan, a US Marine (Ret.), brought his interest in distilling laws and quality to the mix.

In 2014, the trio came together, fueled by their shared belief that St. Mary’s County needed to reconnect with its whiskey roots, and thus, Tobacco Barn Distillery was born. In a humorous twist, Scott admits, “We did not tell our wives until after it was done.”

The Passion for Distilling

At the heart of their venture is a passion for the intersection of industry and agriculture. The founders recognize the significance of collaboration with local farms and small businesses, emphasizing the economic benefits that can arise from such partnerships.

A Fortuitous Journey

The path to establishing Tobacco Barn Distillery has been marked by meaningful milestones. The distillery received its business license on October 13th, the birthday of the U.S. Navy, and its Distilled Spirits License on December 7 th , Pearl Harbor Day, —making it the 13th license issued in Maryland since Prohibition.

Roles within the distillery are well-defined, with each member contributing their expertise: Dan oversees distillery operations, Sean ensures compliance, and Scott serves as the Bourbon Relationship Director, a role that suits his extroverted nature. The team acknowledges the vital support of their wives, who have become invaluable contributors to the distillery’s success.

Making Waves in the Whiskey Industry

Tobacco Barn Distillery has made significant contributions to the whiskey industry, including:

1. Sustainability Leadership: In 2022, they became the first-ever recipients of the Sustainability Leadership Award, underscoring their commitment to responsible practices.

2. Transparency in Production: They meticulously track over 40 fields of data in the distilling process, demonstrating a level of transparency that exceeds state and federal requirements. “We have nothing to hide,” Scott emphasizes.

3. Innovation for Charity: The team is dedicated to finding creative ways to support charitable causes within the industry, combining their love for whiskey with a spirit of giving.

When asked about their greatest impact on the whiskey industry, Scott highlights the importance of collaboration, both within and beyond the industry.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Distillers

For those looking to dive into the world of whiskey distilling, Scott advises, “Don’t wait and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Put in for the distillery you can get approved for. Don’t quit your day job.”

The Future of Maryland Whiskey

Looking ahead, Scott is optimistic about the future of Maryland whiskey. He anticipates growth, enhanced expertise, and increased educational opportunities, particularly in the burgeoning rye market.

A Personal Touch

Beyond the distillery, Scott shares that the team boasts over 120 years of marriage—a rarity that speaks volumes about their dedication to family. Born in California and having lived at six different Navy installations, Scott now calls Maryland home, relishing its four distinct seasons.

Reflecting on his time as an E-2C pilot, he recalls the formative experience of landing on an aircraft carrier in challenging conditions—a moment that shaped him profoundly.

As for his whiskey preferences, Scott enjoys Bourbon chilled and neat, favoring brands like Angel’s Envy, Dad’s Hat, Four Roses High Rye, Old Line Single Malt, and Epoch Rye—other than his own, of course.

Conclusion

The story of Tobacco Barn Distillery transcends the world of whiskey; it is a rich narrative woven with threads of friendship, resilience, and a deep commitment to community. As Scott Sanders, his business partners, and their supportive wives craft exceptional spirits, they remain dedicated to honoring the heritage of whiskey while forging a vibrant path forward. Together, they embody the spirit of collaboration and innovation that is shaping the future of distilling in Maryland.
