Scott Neil: Founder of Horse Soldier Bourbon

Scott Neil’s story is one of transformation, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Growing up on a cattle ranch in central Florida, Scott developed a strong work ethic and an appreciation for American traditions. Inspired by the rugged heroism of John Wayne and the values depicted in the iconic Green Beret films, he carried a spirit of adventure and determination into every chapter of his life.

After a successful career serving in the United States Army Special Forces, including deployments to some of the most challenging environments in the world and being on one of the first teams inserted in Afghanistan after 9/11, Scott decided it was time to chart a new course. He set out to build something that would reflect his values, honor his roots, and celebrate American craftsmanship. This vision came to life in 2015 when Scott and his good friends John and Elizabeth, founded American Freedom Distillery.

The creation of Horse Soldier Bourbon was inspired by Scott’s belief in the power of a good story and a quality product. From the beginning, the brand’s mission was clear: to create a bourbon that’s authentic, award winning, and encapsulates the American spirit.

Scott and his friends traveled the world to master the art of distilling, drawing inspiration from centuries-old techniques and modern innovations. The result was Horse Soldier Bourbon—a premium spirit that blends tradition with innovation.

The name itself, Horse Soldier, is a tribute to the legendary Green Berets who rode horseback into combat in Afghanistan—a story of courage that resonates deeply with Scott and his team. But more than its name, it’s the spirit inside the bottle that sets Horse Soldier apart.

The Three A’s of Horse Soldier Bourbon

Horse Soldier Bourbon is built on three core principles that reflect Scott’s vision for a truly legendary product. They are referred to as “the three A’s”.

  • All-American: From grain to glass, Horse Soldier Bourbon is proudly American-made. Every bottle is crafted with the finest American ingredients, showcasing the best of what this country has to offer.

  • Authentic: Horse Soldier isn’t just a bourbon; it’s a story. Its roots are etched in history, and its founders' values are as real as the bourbon they produce. This authenticity has earned the brand recognition, including being immortalized with the America’s Response Monument at Ground Zero in New York City.

  • Award-Winning: Horse Soldier Bourbon has captured the hearts of bourbon enthusiasts and critics alike, winning multiple prestigious awards. Its latest accolade—Double Gold at the 2022 San Francisco International Spirits Competition—cements its place as one of the finest bourbons available today.

Under Scott’s leadership, American Freedom Distillery has grown into more than a company; it’s a movement. Horse Soldier Bourbon isn’t just about creating exceptional spirits—it’s about building a legacy of quality, community, and shared values.

The launch of their Derring-Do line of premium craft spirits, including gin, vodka, rum, and aged rum, is a testament to the distillery’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Each bottle, much like Horse Soldier Bourbon, carries the passion and craftsmanship that Scott has instilled in the brand.

Scott Neil’s journey is a story of reinvention, from his roots in central Florida to the heights of entrepreneurial success. His dedication to creating something uniquely American and authentically bold is reflected in every bottle of Horse Soldier Bourbon.

Today, Scott continues to inspire others—not just through his exceptional bourbon but through his commitment to “Live Legendary.” Whether raising a glass with friends or mentoring the next generation of distillers, Scott’s journey is far from over. Each sip of Horse Soldier Bourbon is an invitation to join him on that journey.
