Brian Nation

Brian Nation’s journey from Ireland’s renowned whiskey-making traditions to the establishment of a pioneering distillery in Minneapolis is a testament to his skill, vision, and passion for crafting exceptional spirits. A chemical and process engineer by training, Brian’s deep understanding of the technical side of production combined with his sensory expertise in taste and smell has made him one of the most influential figures in the modern whiskey industry. His work at O’Shaughnessy Distillery developing the Keeper’s Heart brand has not only helped bridge the gap between Irish and American whiskey traditions but has also set a new standard for innovation within the craft whiskey movement.

Born and raised in Ireland, Brian Nation’s childhood was steeped in the country’s rich cultural heritage, which sparked an early interest in craftsmanship and the art of distilling. His path to becoming a Master Distiller, however, began in a slightly unexpected direction. After completing his degree in chemical and process engineering, Brian initially sought a career in industries like pharmaceuticals and oil refining. His early work in these fields provided him with valuable experience in process management, but he soon realized these industries felt restrictive and lacked the creative potential he craved.

It wasn’t until Brian applied for a position with Irish Distillers that he began his true journey into the world of whiskey. After sending out hundreds of resumes following graduation, Brian received an unexpected call from the distillery in Midleton, Ireland, inviting him to interview for an environmental engineering role.   Without hesitation he accepted the position and later transitioned into process engineering and project management roles. Over the years, his expertise in chemical engineering, coupled with his growing passion for whiskey production, led to his eventual promotion to Master Distiller in 2013.

Nation’s tenure at Irish Distillers, particularly his work with Jameson, Redbreast, and Midleton, was transformative for both him and the company. As Master Distiller, he played a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of some of Ireland’s most iconic whiskeys, ensuring their consistency while also innovating within the brand. His expertise and dedication helped solidify Irish Distillers’ reputation on the global stage, reinforcing the legacy of these beloved spirits while also shaping the future of Irish whiskey.  Initially joining as an environmental engineer, Brian quickly transitioned into process engineering and project management roles. Over the years, his expertise in chemical engineering, coupled with his growing passion for whiskey production, led to his eventual promotion to Master Distiller in 2013.

During his time at Jameson, Brian played a critical role in refining production techniques, implementing quality control processes, and ensuring the consistency and flavor of one of the world’s best-known whiskeys. His leadership was pivotal in expanding Jameson’s global presence, particularly in markets like the United States and Asia, where the brand saw exponential growth.

Brian also developed a unique relationship with Barry Crockett, Jameson’s Master Distiller at the time, which profoundly influenced his career. Crockett’s mentorship helped Brian hone his sensory skills, particularly his acute sense of taste and smell, which would later prove invaluable in crafting exceptional whiskeys.

In 2020, after over two decades at Irish Distillers, Brian Nation took a bold step and made the decision to leave Jameson to help create a new chapter in American whiskey. He joined O’Shaughnessy Distillery in Minneapolis, Minnesota, founded by the O’Shaughnessy family, who trace their roots to Ireland. The move from Ireland to the United States was more than just a career change for Brian—it was a chance to bring his expertise in Irish whiskey-making to an entirely new context.

Situated in the cold climate of Minnesota, the upstart distillery would have its challenges, particularly in terms of maturation and aging techniques. Brian, however, embraced these challenges, adapting his techniques to accommodate the colder weather by developing innovative aging processes, including maintaining controlled warehouse temperatures to ensure optimal maturation.

One of Brian’s major achievements at O’Shaughnessy was his role in developing the distillery’s flagship product, Keeper’s Heart Bourbon. This blend of Irish and American whiskey-making traditions offers a unique flavor profile that has set the brand apart in the competitive craft whiskey market.  Under Brian’s leadership, the distillery has earned numerous accolades and awards, gaining recognition for its excellence in production and unique blends.

Moreover, Brian’s role in pushing the boundaries of whiskey-making is evident in his willingness to experiment with new aging techniques and unconventional cask finishes. His efforts have not only shaped the success of Keeper’s Heart but have also helped foster a new generation of distillers in both the U.S. and Ireland.

In addition to his technical prowess, Brian is deeply committed to sustainability in whiskey production. At O’Shaughnessy Distillery, he has championed efforts to reduce the environmental impact of production, focusing on sourcing local ingredients and implementing energy-efficient practices. His belief in supporting local communities and maintaining environmentally conscious practices has been integral to the distillery’s mission.

Brian’s influence also extends to the wider whiskey industry. As a mentor to young distillers, his legacy is fostering talent, sharing knowledge, and helping to shape the future of whiskey production worldwide. His ability to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation has earned him respect not only as a Master Distiller but as a pioneering figure in the craft whiskey movement.

Brian Nation’s journey from a young engineer in Ireland to starting up a distillery state side is a remarkable story of passion, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His legacy is one of pushing the boundaries of whiskey-making, blending Irish heritage with American innovation, and creating products that stand as a testament to his craftsmanship and vision. Today, Brian continues to inspire distillers, whiskey enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs alike, proving that the best whiskeys are not just made—they’re crafted with expertise, creativity, and a deep respect for tradition.

Brian, his wife, and their three children now reside in St. Paul, MN, a city with deep Irish roots. Every summer, St. Paul hosts the Irish Fair of Minnesota, one of the nation’s largest Irish festivals, drawing crowds of over 100,000 to celebrate Irish heritage with music, dance, and cultural events. In the weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, both St. Paul and Minneapolis come alive with festive celebrations, including numerous events and gatherings. On St. Patrick’s Day itself, both cities hold lively parades, showcasing their strong Irish traditions and community spirit.
