Lt. Col. Bob Sterner
Email address: BobS@WhiskeyUniv.com
Lt. Colonel Bob Sterner has been a member of Whiskey University since the spring of 2022. In 2016 Whiskey University began offering Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees.
Bob’s career as a Telecom Engineer also included 8 years of service as a volunteer Firefighter and EMT. Bob also holds a degree in Emergency Management. Bob is now retired and is active with the local Emergency Management community and Amateur Radio. Bob has been a home brewer since the 1990’s and continues to enjoy brewing activities in his spare time.
Bob is a graduate of the Summer Class of 2022, graduating from Whiskey University on July 24, 2022, where he earned his Associate of Science degree, and the title of "Certified Bourbon Taster". Bob earned his Bachelor of Arts degree on December 14, 2022. Recently he completed his 60th course, earning his Master of Arts degree on February 12, 2024, and the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Bourbon Brigade.
Bob’s interest in whiskey began in 2020 during a trip to Jack Daniels in Lynchburg, TN. He found the variety of whiskey flavors intriguing as well as the stories and history of the drinks. His natural curiosity drew him to start to learn more about whiskey and that lead to Whiskey University. While this journey began under Covid it didn’t stop the desire to learn more about the drink. Much of Bob’s family history has lived in Scotland and Ireland in the past. When his family came to the new country many of the family settled in areas from Virginia to modern day West Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The journey to learn about American Whiskey and his own family history has opened some fun stories about family and how things are done in the back hills of the Appalachian area.
Bob lives in a remote part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan about ½ hour from the bridge to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and ½ hour from the bridge to the Lower Peninsula of Michigan where Mackinac Island and many tourist destinations flourish during the summer. Bob plans on finding a few local venues to teach Whiskey University classes in person during the summer tourism season.
