Justin served six years in the United States Marine Corps as a F/A-18 fighter jet hydraulic mechanic. Along with teaching classes with Whiskey University, Justin also volunteers with Team Rubicon and is a member of multiple whiskey and bourbon groups. Justin has been married to Gwen since 1999 and has one child.
Justin lives in Lafayette, Colorado now and promotes Whiskey University in Denver Colorado, and Mountain States Region. Justin is a graduate of the Fall Class of 2022, graduating from Whiskey University on September 28th, 2022, where he has earned his Associate of Science Degree with 20 classes, and the title of “Certified Bourbon Taster.” Brandenburg completed his 30th course, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree and the rank of First Lieutenant in the Bourbon Brigade on April 5th, 2023.
Whiskey and bourbon were always something that Justin enjoyed with good friends and family, but his interest in whiskeys began in 2020 following a trip to Kentucky with his family to visit friends. The history, the processes, and the connections with whiskey to the founding of the United States only expanded and solidified his passion. Justin joined Whiskey University and quickly rose in the ranks. Justin was appointed as the Mountain States Regional Leader with Whiskey University in 2024 which covers the six state area of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Idaho and New Mexico.
Whiskey University became an interest in 2021 as it was simply a great vehicle to continue his passion for history and information for whiskey and bourbon. What began as a passing interest has grown to a hunger for more information. Justin has completed Majors in the “Bluegrass Region, Bourbon Capital Region and in Craft Whiskey” as he continues to expand his studies. Brandenberg became a “Chartered Master Whiskey Taster” with the rank of Colonel in the Bourbon Brigade after taking his 60th class and earning his Master of Arts Degree on April 10th of 2023.

Nathan Sumner, CFP® has earned multiple degrees through Whiskey University. He joined our organization in late 2020. In 2016 Whiskey University began offering Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees. Sumner earned his Bourbon Diploma on April 13th, 2021. He met his wife, Melissa, in New York and moved to Colorado in 2012 to start a family (3 boys). Upon relocating, Nathan continued his education in a new field with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) certificate (Terry School of Business at the University of Georgia) and designation (CFP Board). He also has a Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) designation from the American Retirement Association and Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor (CPFA) designation from the National Association of Plan Advisors.

When he’s not chasing his kids to activities, he also teaches children to ski as a Certified Ski Instructor (Professional Ski Instructors of America) with Vail Resorts and volunteers as an active member in Rotary.
Although Nathan enjoys bourbon and whiskey, his passion began from sharing moments with friends, enjoying the flavors these spirits provide and stories shared. Upon further exploration, his appreciation grew to the point of intrigue and fascination the subtle tastes one can pull from this Usige or “water of life” (Gaelic translation).
Feel free to book a class with Nathan at nate@whiskeyuniv.com as he always enjoys sharing his knowledge, and learning from his students over a shared interest.
